Goal Setting and Learning Management System

→→
By : Puan Hamidah Abdul Rahman
Puan Rosenani Sidek

Assalamualaikum and hello . From my last post I had share about plagiarism . Now I would like to share about goal setting and learning management system that i had learned on 19th July .

What Are Goals ?????
  • Goals are the ends toward which we direct our effort .
  • In other words , goals are things we want to achieve , things we aim for as we pursue a certain course of action .
  • You can improve your academic performance in college by learning to set goals that motivate you to do well and that increase your chance for success .

Characteristics of Goals

To be both useful and motivating , the goals you set must have some important characteristics .

  1. Goals Should Be Self-chosen ↣ Goals that are set b your parents , teachers , or friends may not always work for you . ↣ You need to determine or choose your own goals . ↣ You need to decide what you want to accomplish . If you set your own goals you will be more motivated to achieve them .
  2. Goals Should Be Moderately Challenging ↣ One way to set moderately challenging goals is to consider what you have done in the past . ↣ Goals can always be revised, if you discover you can achieve more than you originally set out accomplish .
  3. Goals Should Be Realistic ↣ Think about whether your goals are attainable . Example : It would be unrealistic to expect to get a B or better in Calculus if your math background is very weak and your high school grades in math were never higher than a C . ↣ To set realistic goals , you must carefully evaluate your chances of achieving such goal .
  4. Goals Should Be Measurable ↣ A goal is measurable if you can determine whether you reached it . ↣ It would be difficult to determine whether you achieved your goal if you just wanted to "do well in a course ." ↣ It would be much easier to measure your success if you had aimed for an A or a B .
  5. Goals Should Be Specific ↣ The more specific your goals are , the more motivated you'll be to achieve them , Example : Getting a B in College Algebra is a specific goal , while getting a "good grade" in College Algebra is not .
  6. Goals Should Be Finite / Limits / Bounds ↣ Goals need to have a limited time frame . Example : If a paper is due by Friday , you need to have it done by Friday . However , you might decide to have the paper done by Wednesday so that you can prepare for your big biology exam on Friday . ↣ It's important to set deadlines for all of your goals .
  7. Goals Should Be Positive ↣ Negative goal statements tend to make you feel that you can't really be successful , they aren't motivating . Example : "I don't want to get any lower than a C in any of my classes ," "I won't go to dinner until I get this calculus work done ." ↣  You'll always do better if you are working toward something (when you have a positive attitude) ↣ Avoid using words like try , think , hope and should when you describe your goals .
Long - and Short - Term Goals

  • Long - term goals are the objectives you set for yourself for the end of the year , for four or five years from now , or even for a lifetime .
  • Short - term goals can be set for an hour from now , for the end of the day , week , month , or term ( or semester) . Example : Short - term goals include things like completing a reading assignment , writing an essay , getting a B in a course , getting off probation , or making the Dean's List .
  • Think of your short-term goals as steps towards achieving the long-term goals you've set for yourself.
Academic and Personal Goals
  • Academic goals relate to your course work . They include things like going to class , completing assignments , and preparing for exams .
  • Personal goals , like making new friends , participating in clubs or sporting events , exercise , or even doing your  laundry
Five - Step Approach to Setting Goals
  • STEP ! : Tentative Goal Statement ⟿ Example : I want at least a B in Biology .
  • STEP 2 : List of Obstacles ⟿ Example : I have trouble following the lecture , and I struggle to take notes .
  • STEP 3 : List of Resources ⟿ Example  I'll read the chapter before the lecture . I'll rewrite my notes afterward .
  • STEP 4 : Revised Goal Statement ⟿ Example : I'll try to earn a B in Biology .
  • STEP 5 : Polished Goal Statement ⟿ Example : I will achieve a B in Biology this semester .

Academic Integrity and Performance

By : Encik Mohd. Ikhsan bin Md. Raus
Encik Roslan Jamaluddin
Encik Mohd Faizal Azrul Azwan Muhamed

Assalamualaikum and hi again everybody . This is my 4th lesson learning about study skills . On 12th July I learned how to avoid plagiarism and calculate iCGPA .

What is Plagiarism ?????

Plagiarism is an act of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author's work as one's own , as by not crediting the original author .

Avoiding Plagiarism

Many students are unintentionally guilty of plagiarism when they write reports , assignments and research papers .

How to Prevent Plagiarism ?????

  • Paraphrasing - Express the meaning of (the writer or something written or spoken) using different words , especially to achieve greater clarity .
  • Referencing - Provide ( a book or article) with citations of authorities
Step to Paraphrasing

  • REWORD - place words by using synonyms .
  • REARRANGE - Active to passive , passive to active .
  • RECHECK - Make sure the meaning is same .
PARAPHRASING EXERCISE

Exercising is very positive for the immune system . People should exercise at least three times a week

Exercising gives advantages to immune system . It should be done  at least three times a week .
Our immune system will get benefit when we exercise .It is recommended to be performed three times a week .
Paraphrasing Homework

Students must be given freedom to use their mobile phone in the classroom . It can be used as learning tool for the students to search for extra notes or explanation .
Students must be given an ability to use their mobile phone in the classroom . It can be used as learning tool for the students to explore for additional notes or definition .
Mobile phone must be allowed to used in the classroom by the students . Students can seek for spare notes or answer by using their mobile phone as a learning tool .

Steps to Referencing

One of the most important ways to avoid plagiarism is referencing .
  • Include a REFERENCE PAGE or page of works cited at the end of your paper .
  • check the guidelines for citing sources properly and make sure that the page meets the document formatting guidelines use by UiTM .
  • Look for the APA 6th formatting style .
  • Be sure to edit your research paper carefully and check for plagiarism before submitting it .
  • Refer to your instructor / lecturer for the turnitin account to assess your paraphrasing and the other anti-plagiarism skills .

The Definition of iCGPA

  • The Cumulative Grade Average or iCGPA is a value reported at each end of the semester or duration of study .
  • This value demonstrates the achievement of students in mastering 8 domains of learning outcomes .
  • Student achievement for each program learning outcome is shown through "Spider Web" report .

iCGPA = 3.56

Incomplete Status (TL)

  1. A TL status is for courses such as project exercise / practical training which is not completed within a specific term .
  2. A TL status cannot be more than one consecutive semester . If the student does not complete the assigned exercise / practical training within the specific time frame given , he / she is given an F Grade or Fail .
  3. Any student with a TL status is required to register as a student by paying study fees and registering for the course .
TO BE AWARDED FOR PASS (LU) AND COMPLETED GRADE STATUS , STUDENT SHOULD OBTAIN THE MINIMUM OF 2.00 HPNG

Unsatisfactory Performance

4.C Unsatisfactory performance for the under observation status (P)

P1 : First Observation - the HPNG obtained is within a rang of 1.80 to 2.00

P2 : Second Observation - the HPNG obtained is less than 2.00 after obtaining a P1 in the last semester .
